Interdisciplinarity in Circular Economy – CE Hub Lunchtime Webinar

11/01/202412:00 pm

On Thursday 11th January, the CE-Hub’s Ryan Nolan was joined by Anoushka Dave and Julian Kirchherr to discuss the role of interdisciplinarity in circular economy. Ryan opened the session by speaking about his own work on interdisciplinarity in the context of the NICER Programme before leading into Anoushka’s presentation. Anoushka spoke about interdisciplinarity more generally, and this was followed by Julian who applied a circular economy lens. You can watch back their presentations and the resulting question answer discussion now.

Julian Kirchherr

Julian is an Associate Professor at Roskilde University – which is a part-time position he pursues with much passion alongside his job as a Partner at McKinsey & Company. All Julian’s work is motivated by sketching and helping to implement pathways towards sustainability – which includes social sustainability as much as economic prosperity and environmental quality.

Julian is particularly interested in the concept of the circular economy as a means to achieve sustainability. His research on the circular economy has focused on fundamental aspects, including the definition of the circular economy and its emergence as a research field. Additionally, he has explored circular start-ups and the dynamic capabilities necessary to drive the implementation of circular economy business models. Furthermore, Julian is intrigued by the role of public policies in expediting the transition towards a circular economy.

Ryan Nolan

Ryan is a Postdoctoral Impact Fellow at the University of Exeter Business School, where he works across projects and leads on the CE-Hub’s open source Knowledge Hub. Prior to this, he held teaching positions at various higher and further education institutions in the fields of business and creative industries. He has a PhD from Aarhus University (Denmark) and sits on the editorial board of The Sociological Review. Research interests include the sociotechnical, political and governance dimensions of the circular economy, as well as the epistemic and narrative infrastructures that underlie collaborative knowledge production in triple helix research environments. Ryan approaches these topics from an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing on science and technology studies, sociological, and systems theory perspectives. I am committed to exploring these areas further and the potential for interdisciplinary research to foster innovation and impact.
